Volvo Penta

Volvo Penta

The first widely-produced Volvo engines were manufactured in 1909. The "Penta" (the Greek word for "five") in the company's name signifies the five men that met to discuss the company's original engine design: the B1 Penta. Volvo Penta currently has the most impressive range of marine propulsion systems in the commercial and pleasure boat market today. Furthermore, V-P products have a lot to live up to, given the company's long history and terrific reputation for high-end engines and drives. V-P ships equipment all over the world and serves as the foundation for many high performance pleasure and commercial boats.

Volvo Penta's award-winning engineering team has produced a number of significant engine models on today's marine market. Three of the most popular Volvo Penta gasoline engine and sterndrive packages are the 4.3/DP, 5.0/DP and 5.7/DP. The 4.3/DP is a V-6 engine with a dual prop sterndrive that is made for cruising around in comfort and style. The 5.0/DP and 5.7/DP, while similar in design to the 4.3/DP, represent a significant upgrade in power. The 5.0/DP and the 5.7/DP both feature an eight-cylinder engine, which makes them perfect for high-performance boats. For fans of diesel engines, the new D series engines feature low emissions, low odor and quiet performance. For example, we think the D3-160/DP-S is a great choice. This diesel-powered sterndrive is chock-full of useful technological innovations. The fact that this engine is relatively lightweight and low in fuel emissions has made it a fast favorite for both builders looking for a fully environmentally compliant diesel, as well as for boat owners looking for a smart upgrade option.

For those interested in engines only, V-P makes a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines (a.k.a. "Bobtails"). Many of these Volvo engines come with advanced electronic sensors and controls for precise monitoring. ECMs (Electronic Control Modules) and EDCs (Electronic Data Controls) are able to automate many forms of engine operation, such as engine load, coolant temperature and fuel detonation/combustion. ECMs and EDCs are available on many different Volvo engine models, including the popular TAMD series and new D series diesels. Many V-P engines are perfect for modifying existing sterndrives. If you are interested in duo props, you'll be glad to know that your V-P 280, 290 or SX can be reconfigured for use as a DP. Many OMC Cobra users have used Volvo replacement parts in their drives; others have simply converted their drives to Volvo's SX drive. Volvo's one-to-two year warranties and history of reliability give buyers an added confidence when making such modifications.
